Groan of the Day

St. Peter was working the Pearly Gates one day when a man appeared before him. The man said, "Here I am, let me in."

St. Peter said, "Wait a minute, it isn't that easy. I've got to check in the Book of Life to see if your name is recorded there." St Peter scanned the book and said, "I don't see where you've even done one good deed in your whole life?"

The man said, "That's not accurate. One time I saw six bikers harassing a young woman. I yelled at them to leave her alone. When they ignored me I got a tire iron out of my trunk, charged over there and hit the leader in the head knocking him out cold. I looked around at the others and said, 'When I said leave her alone I meant it. If anyone bothers her again you'll answer to me!'"

St. Peter said, "Wait a minute, I don't see that recorded here. When exactly did this happen?"

The man looked at St. Peter and said, "Just a minute ago."

Visit ‘golimestonetrails.org’ for End of Summer Adventures!

Looking for something to do this weekend?  Check out the website GO LIMESTONE TRAILS.ORG! Limestone Bluffs RC&D is pleased to announce the creation of four new cultural arts trails and webpage at www.golimestonetrails.org. The new tourism-oriented online resource highlights arts, music, cultural and historical sites that are considered ‘hidden gems’ in a six-county area of Eastern Iowa. The website features cultural venues in Cedar, Clinton, Delaware, Dubuque, Jackson and Jones counties in Iowa.

The project, funded through an Iowa Arts Council Partnership Grant and supported by Limestone Bluffs Resource Conservation & Development, has been under construction for the past year by the volunteer members of the Limestone Bluffs Regional Cultural Council, a grassroots regional leadership team dedicated to enhancing preservation, protection, interpretation and promotion of Eastern Iowa’s art, culture and history.

A visit to the new website, www.golimestonetrails.org will reveal a collection of interesting cultural points of interest in each of the six-member counties PLUS four thematic trails visitors can visit all within a day’s drive.  Perfect for late summer adventures, the ‘trails’ showcase venues focused on the promotion of fine arts, history, local museums and points of particular interest in the more rural areas of Eastern Iowa. These places are considered hidden treasures in their respective communities, maybe not so well known, and yet are full of interesting surprises for visitors.

Maps of the trails are available to download from the website, and soon will be available at each featured trail location and at local tourism/chamber/welcome centers as well. Visitors should double check hours of availability and costs for each venue, but many opportunities are free and ALL are family-friendly.

Watch for updates and future trail announcements on the GO LIMESTONE TRAILS website and find GO LIMESTONE TRAILS on Facebook, too.

For more information visit www.golimestonebluffs.org or contact Lori Scovel, Executive Director, Limestone Bluffs RC&D at 563-221-1930 / lscovel@limestonebluffsrcd.org

National Farm Toy Museum

Hidden amongst the patch worked fields of green and gold, the National Farm Toy Museum, has been home to thousands of farm toys and collectibles since 1986. The idea of a farm toy museum came from the growing awareness of the farm toy hobby through passionate and enthusiastic collectors, and the demand for additional space to house the National Farm Toy Show. Taking note of these two elements Dave Bell, then of the ERTL Company, and Claire Scheibe, founder and past president of the Toy Farmer Ltd. met with the Dyersville Industries, Inc. (DII) Board of Directors to propose the National Farm Toy Museum.

As was expected, the DII Board did not immediately accept the idea of building a museum. One major concern the Directors focused on was the expense to construct the facility. To help defray the costs a fund raising campaign was put together that included introducing and selling a series of collector tractors. The first series was a line of vintage Cockshutt tractors. The series consisted of a three-tractor set that was produced from 1986 thru 1990. Those who purchased the first set are still acknowledged in the museum today. The result of the fund raising campaign and the sales of the Cockshutt series tractor sales was the National Farm Toy Museum. Every year the National Farm Toy Museum selects an exclusive collector's series tractor to produce for the benefit of the Museum.
